If you are a psychotherapist, you will counsel clients who are abusing drugs and alcohol. This course contains basic information about substance abuse as well as more advanced information, including prescription drug abuse, which is rampant and increasing rapidly. The material will give you a basic understanding of the prevalence of these problems, how to screen, how to recognize denial, and how to make appropriate referrals. It also contains handy screening tools, questionnaires, blood alcohol level charts, and handouts for therapists, clients, and family members. (4 CEU hours)

Course Objectives

By the end of the  course, therapists will:

  • Have a basic understanding of the statistics and prevalence of substance abuse problems.
  • Know how to screen for substance use disorders.
  • Have the tools to make an accurate DSM diagnosis, including severity.
  • Know how to recognize denial.
  • Have tools to speak to family members.
  • Have tools to identify risk factors.
  • Understand effective therapeutic treatments.
  • Know how to make appropriate referrals.
